A fund to provide relief to needy workers in the Free Trade Zone

The Commercial and Industrial Workers’ Union has set up a fund to provide essential food and medicines to workers and their families who are being under quarantine in the Free Trade Zone due to Covid-19 and unable to afford for their food and medicine. Commenting on this, Comrade Linus Jayatilleke, President of the Commercial and Industrial Workers’ Union states that a large number of these helpless workers are calling daily for food and medicine. He says that although it is the responsibility of the company owners to provide the necessary food to the employees under quarantine, many companies have neglected that responsibility. Therefore, he states that although the trade unions should have jointly set up a fund to fulfill this need, the union has now started this fund on their own due to the urgency of the need and hopes for the support of all.
