An attempt made by the Maradana Police today to arrest the General Secretary of the United Health Workers Union Ven. Tampitiye Sugathananda Thero has been foiled by health workers. Health workers today organized a protest and a march based on 11 demands affecting health workers. Claiming that there is an arrest warrant police tried to arrest Sugathananda Thero before the protest. At this point group of health workers surrounded Ven. Sugathananda Thero and rescued him. Malika Abeykoon, who was photographing the incident at the time, was arrested by the police along with his camera equipment. Police has said that Malika had obstructed the police. He is supposed to produce to the courts tomorrow.
Health workers then successfully held the demonstration and march. Ven. Sugathananda Thero told the Left Voice that the festival advances scheduled to be paid to the health workers have not been paid today also.
